Hope For Wine Allergy Sufferers

This 2009 photograph captured a sneeze in prog...Image via WikipediaThis MSNBC News Article gives wine allergy sufferers some future hope of a cure, Sipping without sneezing? Scientists thwart wine allergies.

In a nutshell, about 8 percent of the world's population can’t sip wine without suffering symptoms of a bad cold. Sulfites cause symptoms in about 1 percent of that group, and a new substance, glycoproteins (sugar-coated proteins), are now being blamed for the other 7 percent.

Mike Lupica To Tiger - ... Sing

Everytime I turn on the TV to see how Tiger is doing in a tournament, if he's not in contention, I'm certainly less interested.

As Mr. Lupica says, "Shut up and sing."

Golf Hawaii - NCL Pride of America

A picture of the cruise ship MS Pride of AmericaImage via Wikipedia
We just got back yesterday from our Hawaii cruise with NCL's Golf Hawaii Program aboard Pride of America.

The cruise ship started/ended in Honolulu Oahu, and visited the islands of Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai. We played on Oahu before joining the cruise, and played 4 times throughout the cruise. This was our first experience with a golf excursion arranged through the cruise ship.

In a nutshell, the golf experience was wonderful and far exceeded our expectations. Here's why:
  1. The onboard PGA golf pro, Cory McKim, was the utmost golf professional.
  2. He joined us on all the golf outings, making sure the transporation, and golf arrangements for each course was smooth sailing.
  3. I've been playing for less than a year and found Cory's teaching style perfect for me, while out on the course, back on the ship's "golfing cage", and during the video analysis of my swing out on the course.

Chez Panisse - The Head Chefs

Chez PanisseImage via WikipediaWhen I hear the restaurant name, Chez Panisse, I usually jump to the name of Alice Waters. But wait, there are some other key players, namely the head chefs, David Tanis and Jean-Pierre Moulle'.

Tanis just published his new book, Heart of the Artichoke and Other Kitchen Journeys, that is a sequel to his A Platter of Figs and Other Recipes. The new book continues and expands on the idea and feeling of intimate French dinners, for small, medium, and large gatherings.

Golf Excursions Booked - Boning Up On Pelz Putting Bible

Updated October 23, 2022

Sadly, the original, most important link broke.

---  the original post follows below  ---

I'm stoked.  Upcoming Norwegian Cruise Line cruise in Hawaii.  Just booked 4 days of golf. They take care of everything, Golf Hawaii Program aboard Pride of America.

In prep, I'm thinking I should be studying up on Dave Pelz' book, Dave Pelz's Putting Bible: The Complete Guide to Mastering the Green (Dave Pelz Scoring Game Series).

In parallel, I'm putting in the hallway.

Golf Course Vandalism

Canada Geese and morning fog in Golden Gate ParkImage via WikipediaSheesh, why do folks do things like this, car-driving culprit or culprits responsible for destroying three holes at the Golden Gate Park golf course.

We play at a number of San Francisco municipal golf courses including this one at Golden Gate Park. I started  learning how to play golf at this course about a year ago, so it holds a special place in my heart.

I hope they catch the culprits.

Cooking For Geeks

When I think about cooking geeks, I think about Alton Brown's TV show.  Alton teaches the science behind cooking, so that we can all become better chefs.

Riffing on this food science theme is:
Jeff Potter's:  Cooking for Geeks

I'm particularly intrigued about learning how to make flavored gels from sodium alginate.

Energy Jewelry To Improve Your Game

Updated 12/6/2022

The original link broke.

You can still read about the same topic here:

---  the original post follows below  ---

I recently ran across a news article describing energy jewelry, purported to improve balance, energy, recovery time, and flexibility, Athletes boost business for energy bracelets.

Personally, I don't use or wear these kind of products, because I'm just downright skeptical. If  you have any experience with these kind of energy items, could you comment one way or the other?

My New Callaway Eterni-Tees - I like them

I prefer to play golf with unbreakable tees. This way I don't have to keep buying them, break them, and litter the ground with them.

On the other hand, every now and again, I'll forget to pick-up the tee, and my inventory shrinks. I've been unable to re-order my usual brand, so I switched to:  Callaway Eterni-Tees 5-Pack Combos.

I like them. Because they're flat, they can be positioned in the ground to be virtually frictionless, and can be used to repair divots. That means I don't need to carry around a dedicated divot repair tool. Love that!

I was in conversation with some folks at work, and found myself reminiscing about a 3 star Michelin experience at L'Auberge de L'Ill in Illhaeusern.

Ben Franklin Wine Quotes

Portrait of Benjamin FranklinImage via WikipediaSome friends of ours gave us a bottle of wine with a Ben Franklin quote on it.

This post is dedicated to Ben Franklin and his quotes about wine.
"Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance."

"Wine is sure proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." (shortened version of the original quote)

Sprouting Garlic Cloves - Tips

This is one full head of garlic beside another...Image via Wikipedia
I was watching a TV show today and learned a couple things about storing garlic cloves, and what a green sprout coming out of the clove means.

First, it's probably not a good idea to store garlic cloves in the refrigerator, because they'll tend to grow and send out a green shoot.  It's better to store them warm and dry to keep them dormant.

Second, if your cloves have sprouted, and you eat them, you can expect them to taste slightly bitter. So when prepping, it's a good idea to remove the green shoots.
