The Best Tee Time According To Your Body

Tiger Woods, champion golfer, drives the ball ...Image via Wikipedia
An interesting read, if you believe this New York Times article, Early Birds Less Likely to Catch the Birdies.

In summary, your body says the best time to play golf is 10 am or 4pm.

My personal experience jives with this.  I've generally struggled in very early morning play, and my hole-in-one happened between 5-8 pm, as mentioned in the article.

I ran across this Redbook article, and thought you might enjoy it, Tips to Survive Theme Parks with Your Kids.

In a nutshell:
  1. Choose parks wisely, if there are strict size limits on rides.
  2. Strategize wait times.
  3. Coordinate a complementary mix of little kid and big kid activities.
  4. Avoid buying too many toys.

USDA - Food Jargon Gone Wild

Uhhh, just when you thought you understood the basic things in life, along comes bureaucracy and complex jargon.

Check-out the USDA's jargon around food security, insecurity, and hunger:

About Bitter Eggplant - and more

EggplantImage via Wikipedia
We had dinner over at friends last night. They served a delicious tomato-based eggplant dish. It wasn't bitter at all, so the whole table of guests launched into a conversation about eggplant selection, prepping, and cooking.

After a quick (not exhaustive) Google search, I think these are my takeaways:
  • bitterness is getting bred out of eggplants, therefore, salting eggplant is becoming less important
  • selecting young, not overripe eggplant is good, because older eggplant and those with more seeds tend to be more bitter
  • don't let your eggplant sit around too long before cooking it. Eat it closer to the time of purchase, or it too can get more bitter.

Sharp Park Golf Course - Environmental Controversy

USGS Satellite photo of the San Francisco Bay ...Image via Wikipedia
I've played at Sharp Park Golf Course only once before.  I was looking forward to playing it again this weekend, but alas, the week-long winter storm dashed any hopes of that happening today (had to cancel our reservation). I'm sure the pond is flooding the fairway and standing water must be everywhere.

So it's interesting timing that this SFGate news article caught my eye, Frogs, golfers both endangered at S.F.'s Sharp Park.

Frogs, and snakes, and a San Francisco golf program putting a drain on the city General Fund ... oh my!

HR 1161 - Booze Shipping

Modern stainless steel beer barrels—also calle...Image via Wikipedia
Lots of controversy here.  The posturing is palpable.

Dr. Vino says, "Now known officially as HR 1161, and unofficially as the Wholesaler Protection Act, the bill seeks to restrict legal challenges to the interstate shipment of wine (and beer and spirits) and keep the legislation that affects wine shipping at the state level."   As for me, I prefer to have as many imbibing choices possible, and access to all the products crafted across the country.

Fermentation - The Daily Wine Blog asks, "What lies and fallacies lie ahead in the effort to prevent America's beer wholesalers from passing HR 1161 and keeping craft beers, wines and a spirits out of consumer hands?"

All You Can Drink Cruises - Controversy

Royal Caribbean International FlagImage via Wikipedia
I'm glad to hear that "all you can drink" packages are rolling out, Cruise Critic: Cruise and Booze: All-You-Can-Drink Packages Coming From Royal Caribbean.

We drink a fair amount on cruises, so the convenience of a package makes sense to me. However, there's a buzz of controversy. Cruise Critic Editor in Chief, Carolyn Spencer Brown, asks, "Will all-you-can-drink packages encourage people to drink to excess, or simply offer a convenient and money-saving option for those with big bar bills?"

What's your opinion?

Finicky About Wine Alcohol Levels

This image shows a red wine glass.Image via Wikipedia
When we're drinking wine, it's often fun to try and guess the alcohol level. For us the alcohol level is something to observe, and not something that detracts from our enjoyment of the wine.

However, if you're interested in or finicky about alcohol levels, or don't like high octane wines, then this Jon Bonne' article is worth a fun read, Should We Print Alcohol Levels?
