Global Entry - Expedited airport security clearance

Wow! I just learned about this.  Hopefully you'll find this useful if you fly a lot and can make use of it.

Global Entry:

"Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Though intended for frequent international travelers, there is no minimum number of trips necessary to qualify for the program. Participants may enter the United States by using automated kiosks located at select airports.

At airports, program participants proceed to Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place their fingertips on the scanner for fingerprint verification, and make a customs declaration. The kiosk issues the traveler a transaction receipt and directs the traveler to baggage claim and the exit."

In Business, Nondrinking Can Be a Costly Expense

In Business, Nondrinking Can Be a Costly Expense - NYTimes.com:

"Still, research supports the idea that nondrinkers have a harder time climbing the corporate ladder. Multiple studies have shown that moderate drinkers earn more money than those who don’t drink, though heavy drinkers earn less than moderate drinkers."

Tiger goes winless -- and irrelevant

How totally disappointing.

Tiger goes winless -- and irrelevant -- at Ryder Cup | Detroit Free Press | freep.com:

"Finally, there was the ultimate ignominy of the 18th hole Sunday. After Kaymer's putt allowed Europe to retain the Cup, all Tiger had to do was par the 18th hole to ensure that he would win his match, meaning the competition would officially end in a tie, 14-14. He couldn't even do that. Tiger completely missed the hole on his four-foot par putt, allowing Molinari to win the hole and halve the match, and Europe to actually win the Cup, 14 1/2 to 13 1/2.

"After that all went down, my putt was useless," Woods said. "It was inconsequential. So I hit it too quick, and gave him his putt, and it was already over."

That 18th hole served as a fitting metaphor for Woods' long weekend: No victories. Little intensity. And perhaps worst of all, totally irrelevant."

Malbec - Bordeaux's Potential Renaissance - Argentina's Shining Star

Wine-Knows: Fine Wine & Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler: Malbec: Bordeaux’s Potential Renaissance & Argentina’s Shining Star:

"Bordeaux’s vineyards were completely replanted after the phylloxera epidemic...mainly with Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon/Franc because Malbec didn’t take well to grafting (grafting was necessary to prevent a return of phylloxera).  In the 20th century Malbec lost further ground due to its sensitivities to mildew from Bordeaux’s wet climate, as well as frost brought by the bitter Atlantic storms (the severe 1956 frost wiped out a significant portion of the Malbec vines).  Today, however. Malbec may be making a come-back in Bordeaux."

Follow the link below to some delicious zucchini flower recipes . . .

Wine-Knows: Fine Wine & Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler:

"How to prepare them?  I have several wonderful recipes but my fave is the way I first learned to eat them on the island of Capri in the 1970’s…sautéed in olive oil.  After taking a class in Italy solely on zucchini flowers and much experimentation in my kitchen, I think I’ve perfected this method.  My batter includes . . . Patience serving Tiger Woods well in Open Championship at Royal Lytham - ESPN

Go Tiger!  We want to see more patience and some more brilliance!

Patience serving Tiger Woods well in Open Championship at Royal Lytham - ESPN:

"He had fond memories of the place, having been low amateur here in 1996 and calling it one of his favorite courses on the Open Championship rota. He enjoyed the challenge of avoiding the numerous pitfalls of the old links. Without saying so, he appeared determined to put an end to his four-year major championship victory drought.

Part of the plan was to stay out of the numerous bunkers that give Royal Lytham its teeth. The wind was down and the course was soft, but getting into those hazards is, well, hazardous."

Fare relief: Airlines offering fall sales earlier this year

Fare relief: Airlines offering fall sales earlier this year - USATODAY.com:

"Starting Aug. 20, many airlines will slash fares on their cheapest domestic seats by 10% to 20%, says Rick Seaney of the price-tracking site, FareCompare.com.

Carriers normally cut fares once the kids head back to school. But this year, Seaney says, the deals are coming sooner as airlines try to woo fliers who may be reluctant to travel while the economy is still struggling."

Phonies make wine sleuth see red

This article is an interesting read about phony high-priced wine, and finding out if you've got a fake bottle.

Phonies make wine sleuth see red - SFGate:

"Downey is one of the experts you call if you're worried your Romanee-Conti, Lafite or Sassicaia might not be legit.

For more than a decade she's been on counterfeit high alert, first at three auction houses and now at Chai Consulting, the San Francisco wine collection management firm she founded in 2005."

Lost in transit: personal devices pile up at U.S. airports

Holy cow!  Hang on to your valuables people!

At least ID label your items if you're going to lose them.

Lost in transit: personal devices pile up at U.S. airports - Travel Kit:

"As for getting your lost electronics back, your odds are slightly better than 50-50, said Glynn, with 52 percent of items, on average, getting returned to travelers. The numbers were significantly higher in San Francisco (80 percent) and Miami, where 90 percent of laptops and slightly more than 50 percent of smartphones and tablets made it back to their owners."

CA foie gras ban proves confusing, hard to enforce

Foie gras ban proves confusing, hard to enforce - SFGate:

"But chefs and purveyors in California say the state law is far from clear. Restaurateurs want to know whether it's legal to cook foie gras and serve it without accepting payment. Purveyors from outside California want to know whether it's legal to ship it into the state.

"We've talked to several lawyers, and there are two conflicting schools of thought," said Hudson Valley's Marcus Henley. His company will stop shipping to California, even though the state accounts for nearly 19 percent of the firm's $16 million in annual sales. "The law says you can't sell in California, but if I'm in New York ... well there's no clarity there."

Even peace officers aren't exactly sure how they're supposed to enforce the new law. For example: How will they know the difference between pate made from a force-fed duck and a regular-fed duck?"

Tiger Woods passes Jack Nicklaus with 74th PGA Tour win

Woods won for the 74th time as he held off Bo Van Pelt on the back nine of the Blue Course at scorching Congressional Country Club to win the AT&T National on Sunday.

Tiger Woods passes Jack Nicklaus with 74th PGA Tour win – USATODAY.com:

"With a final-round, 2-under-par 69, Woods beat Van Pelt by two shots and became the first to win three times on the PGA Tour this season. It is the 12th season in which Woods has won at least three times. Woods has won three of his last seven starts and his 30-month winless drought on Tour after a late-night car accident in November 2009 is becoming a distant memory."

Tiger Woods improves AT&T position with 3-under 68

Glad to see Tiger scoring and teasing us again. The question is whether he can keep this going through Sunday.

Tiger Woods improves ATT position with 3-under 68; Hunter Mahan leads - ESPN:

"A day after comparing the conditions this week at Congressional to a U.S. Open, Tiger Woods fought his way on Friday morning to a 3-under-par 68 in his second round of the AT&T National.

Woods' two-day total of 2-under par left him five shots off the lead held by Hunter Mahan."

Tiger Woods admits short game coming up short

It's painful to watch Tiger's short game on TV.  Hoping there's some improvement on the way.

Tiger Woods admits short game coming up short – USATODAY.com:

""I finally have a swing that doesn't hurt, and I am still generating power, but it doesn't hurt anymore," said Woods, who overhauled his swing previously with Butch Harmon and Hank Haney and is now working with Sean Foley. "I would say certainly my short game has been something that has taken a hit, and it did the same thing when I was working with Butch and the same thing when I was working with Hank."

A Piece of Paradise in Provence - Wine-Knows: Fine Wine & Gourmet Food Journeys

You've got to go to Chateau Talaud!  Follow the link to learn more.

A Piece of Paradise in Provence - Wine-Knows: Fine Wine & Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler:

"Being the owner of a company that conducts food and wine tours throughout the world I am frequently asked regarding my favorite spot for a personal holiday.   Both my husband and I agree that it is Chateau Talaud in Provence.   We’ve been here too many times to count and each time this charmer exceeds our oh-so-very-high expectations.

I particularly love the attention to detail of the chateau...from the luxurious fabrics to the carefully chosen cutlery and dishes. It's easy to understand why the property has been featured in the European edition of Architectural Digest.   But, the property is any thing but stuffy---it is quiet country elegance with a “comfort-food-for-the-soul” kind of vibe."

What’s next for Tiger Woods?

Updated May 23, 2024

The original link broke.

Sadly, Tiger isn't likely to return to form.

---  the original post follows below  ---

What’s next for Tiger Woods? - BostonHerald.com:

"He’s healthy. He’s hungry. He’s hot.

Tiger Woods comes to the Olympic Club this week having recaptured much of the long-misplaced skill, swagger and intimidating aura that some thought was lost forever.

His reconstructed swing is starting to look sweet. His once legendary putter, while still betraying him at times, is beginning to revert to divining-rod form." . . .

"Perhaps Nicklaus’ opinion on Woods’ immediate future — specifically at Olympic — carries the most weight.

“I suspect No. 15 will come for Tiger Woods in about two weeks,” Nicklaus said at the Memorial trophy presentation. “If he drives the ball this way, and plays this way, I’m sure it will. And if not, it will surprise me greatly.”"
