CA foie gras ban proves confusing, hard to enforce

Foie gras ban proves confusing, hard to enforce - SFGate:

"But chefs and purveyors in California say the state law is far from clear. Restaurateurs want to know whether it's legal to cook foie gras and serve it without accepting payment. Purveyors from outside California want to know whether it's legal to ship it into the state.

"We've talked to several lawyers, and there are two conflicting schools of thought," said Hudson Valley's Marcus Henley. His company will stop shipping to California, even though the state accounts for nearly 19 percent of the firm's $16 million in annual sales. "The law says you can't sell in California, but if I'm in New York ... well there's no clarity there."

Even peace officers aren't exactly sure how they're supposed to enforce the new law. For example: How will they know the difference between pate made from a force-fed duck and a regular-fed duck?"

Tiger Woods passes Jack Nicklaus with 74th PGA Tour win

Woods won for the 74th time as he held off Bo Van Pelt on the back nine of the Blue Course at scorching Congressional Country Club to win the AT&T National on Sunday.

Tiger Woods passes Jack Nicklaus with 74th PGA Tour win – USATODAY.com:

"With a final-round, 2-under-par 69, Woods beat Van Pelt by two shots and became the first to win three times on the PGA Tour this season. It is the 12th season in which Woods has won at least three times. Woods has won three of his last seven starts and his 30-month winless drought on Tour after a late-night car accident in November 2009 is becoming a distant memory."

Tiger Woods improves AT&T position with 3-under 68

Glad to see Tiger scoring and teasing us again. The question is whether he can keep this going through Sunday.

Tiger Woods improves ATT position with 3-under 68; Hunter Mahan leads - ESPN:

"A day after comparing the conditions this week at Congressional to a U.S. Open, Tiger Woods fought his way on Friday morning to a 3-under-par 68 in his second round of the AT&T National.

Woods' two-day total of 2-under par left him five shots off the lead held by Hunter Mahan."

Tiger Woods admits short game coming up short

It's painful to watch Tiger's short game on TV.  Hoping there's some improvement on the way.

Tiger Woods admits short game coming up short – USATODAY.com:

""I finally have a swing that doesn't hurt, and I am still generating power, but it doesn't hurt anymore," said Woods, who overhauled his swing previously with Butch Harmon and Hank Haney and is now working with Sean Foley. "I would say certainly my short game has been something that has taken a hit, and it did the same thing when I was working with Butch and the same thing when I was working with Hank."

A Piece of Paradise in Provence - Wine-Knows: Fine Wine & Gourmet Food Journeys

You've got to go to Chateau Talaud!  Follow the link to learn more.

A Piece of Paradise in Provence - Wine-Knows: Fine Wine & Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler:

"Being the owner of a company that conducts food and wine tours throughout the world I am frequently asked regarding my favorite spot for a personal holiday.   Both my husband and I agree that it is Chateau Talaud in Provence.   We’ve been here too many times to count and each time this charmer exceeds our oh-so-very-high expectations.

I particularly love the attention to detail of the chateau...from the luxurious fabrics to the carefully chosen cutlery and dishes. It's easy to understand why the property has been featured in the European edition of Architectural Digest.   But, the property is any thing but stuffy---it is quiet country elegance with a “comfort-food-for-the-soul” kind of vibe."

What’s next for Tiger Woods?

What’s next for Tiger Woods? - BostonHerald.com:

"He’s healthy. He’s hungry. He’s hot.

Tiger Woods comes to the Olympic Club this week having recaptured much of the long-misplaced skill, swagger and intimidating aura that some thought was lost forever.

His reconstructed swing is starting to look sweet. His once legendary putter, while still betraying him at times, is beginning to revert to divining-rod form." . . .

"Perhaps Nicklaus’ opinion on Woods’ immediate future — specifically at Olympic — carries the most weight.

“I suspect No. 15 will come for Tiger Woods in about two weeks,” Nicklaus said at the Memorial trophy presentation. “If he drives the ball this way, and plays this way, I’m sure it will. And if not, it will surprise me greatly.”"

Tiger Woods Wins Memorial Tournament 2012, Ties Jack Nicklaus With 73 PGA Tour Wins

Matching another milestone.

Tiger Woods Wins Memorial Tournament 2012, Ties Jack Nicklaus With 73 PGA Tour Wins:

"With a remarkable rally even by his standards, Tiger Woods birdied three of his last four holes to win the Memorial on Sunday and match tournament host Jack Nicklaus with his 73rd title on the PGA Tour.

Woods was one shot behind and looking at probable bogey in deep rough behind the 16th green when he chipped in from 50 feet for birdie to tie for the lead. In the group behind him, Rory Sabbatini made bogey from the bunker on the 16th hole and never caught up.

Woods closed with a 5-under 67, matching the best score of the final round. He won the Memorial for the fifth time. Woods and Nicklaus are tied for second place in career wins on tour, trailing Sam Snead at 82."

Tiger Woods wins again, and for now, that’s enough

Wow, what a finish!

Tiger Woods wins again, and for now, that’s enough | Devil Ball Golf - Yahoo! Sports:

"This was a vintage performance from Woods, but let's not forget that his three greatest challengers, Spencer Levin, Rickie Fowler and Rory Sabbatini, all started leaking oil down the stretch. Woods deserved the win, but the troubles of his playing partner and the pairing behind him made it that much easier."

Sunday could be special for Woods at Memorial Tournament

Come on Tiger, hang tough and stay consistent!

Sunday could be special for Woods at Memorial Tournament | McClatchy Tribune News Service | The Bellingham Herald:

"Tiger Woods is 1 stroke and two rounds away from tying Jack Nicklaus for the second-most victories in PGA Tour history.

There would be no more fitting tournament to do it than the Memorial, founded and hosted by Nicklaus on the course that Jack built, Muirfield Village Golf Club.

"We've got a long way to go for that," Woods said. "Obviously it would be nice, but I've still got half a tournament to go.""

"Chocolate lover?  Hazelnut nut?  In the 1850’s, before Italy was even a nation, a chocolate-maker in the sophisticated food-loving city of Turin (the center of the powerful House of Savoy) invented the perfect union of these two culinary gems.  He named it Gianduja (john due yuh) after a marionette character who was the popular local folk icon.  "

Tiger Woods' consistency saves his round of 70 at Memorial - ESPN:

"Coming off his worst three-tournament stretch as a pro, Tiger Woods returned to the type of golf Thursday that typically has led to good performances in his career.

Woods birdied three of the par-5s at Muirfield Village Golf Club, made several good par saves when he missed greens, and overcame a double bogey at his ninth hole to shoot 2-under-par 70 at the Memorial Tournament, where he trailed leader Scott Stallings by 4 shots."

Who hates cilantro? Study aims to find out

This is really interesting to me as I'm American-born and of Chinese descent. I grew up in a household that cooked using cilantro, and I hated it growing up. Now as an adult, decades later, I love cilantro!

The Body Odd - Who hates cilantro? Study aims to find out:

"Researchers found an aversion to cilantro ranged from a low of 3 percent to a high of 21 percent among six different ethnic groups.

Young Canadians with East Asian roots, which included those of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese descent, had the highest prevalence of people who disliked the herb at 21 percent. Caucasians were second at 17 percent, and people of African descent were third at 14 percent.

Among the herb's fans, the group with the fewest number of people who disliked cilantro were those of Middle Eastern background at 3 percent, followed by those of Hispanic and South Asian ancestry at 4 percent and 7 percent respectively."

Tiger Woods holds fans-only Q&A via social media Facebook, Twitter

The Q and A video on Tiger's website:   http://web.tigerwoods.com/video/20946851

Tiger Woods holds fans-only Q and A via social media Facebook, Twitter - ESPN:

"The only questions Tiger Woods fielded before his next tournament came from his fans.

Instead of a news conference before this week's Wells Fargo Championship, Woods answered 19 questions Monday in a 15-minute video posted on his website. The questions were submitted through Facebook and Twitter.

The timing of the decision was peculiar. Woods is coming off his worst performance ever at the Masters, a tie for 40th in which he finished 15 shots behind and was roundly criticized for kicking his 9-iron in disgust after a poor tee shot on the par-3 16th hole in the second round.

Woods typically speaks to the media before every tournament. This time, he will not speak to reporters until his first round Thursday at Quail Hollow."

Code-sharing confusion scuttles Bahamas vacation

What?!

Since when does a colleague qualify to be a person's supervisor.  Give us a break!

Code-sharing confusion scuttles Bahamas vacation:

"When you're on a code-sharing flight, it means you need to be extra careful. Don't just call your airline to confirm the flight - call the airline operating the flight. A system error like this, while rare, might be caught with a simple call.

If you're stuck in a situation like this again, politely ask the Expedia representative to escalate the call. You can do that by calmly asking to speak with that person's direct supervisor - not "a supervisor" or "someone in charge" since that can be interpreted in many ways and could land you with an agent's colleague who will proceed to tell you it can't be done."

I'm definitely in the 72.4 %.   ... and I've certainly seen my share of attempts to put a piano in the overhead bin, 'nuff said.

Overhead Bin - Mishandled bag rates drop, but tensions remain in the airline cabin:

"Either way, for many travelers, the improvement in mishandled-bag rates is likely to be considered small consolation in light of the crush of carry-on bags in the cabin. In fact, according to a report issued by U.S. Travel, an industry trade association, last November, 72.4 percent of air travelers listed “people who bring too many carry-on bags through the security checkpoint” as one of their top five frustrations — more than any other complaint.

“All [the airlines] have done is move the problem from the belly of the plane to the cabin,” said Hess. “You sit there and someone comes in and insists they can fit their piano in the overhead bin. It’s ridiculous.”"

Can Tiger Woods win? Watch for these signs

Watch for these signs and more . . .
  • Keep track of his three-putts: No more than four
  • Translating his Masters IQ into well-executed shots
  • Is he pulverizing the par-5s?
Can Tiger Woods win? Watch for these signs – USATODAY.com:

"Woods has 12 top-10s in 15 starts as a professional at Augusta National. In his last seven starts here, he hasn't done worse than a tie for sixth. Over time, patterns have formed regarding what happens when he wins here and when he doesn't.
Here are factors that might decide whether Woods breaks through again this weekend and dons a fifth green jacket."

Wine-Knows Travel: Truffle Oil --- Buyer Beware!

Let the buyer beware!

Wine-Knows: Fine Wine and Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler: Truffle Oil---Buyer Beware!:

"Mama mia…imagine my surprise when I came across an article in the New York Times talking about knock-off truffle oils.  If it says "Truffle Essence" or "Truffle Aroma" it is SYNTHETIC, made in a laboratory from chemicals that mimic the smell of the glorious tuber.

Buyer Beware!  If you’re shopping for truffle oil be sure to carefully inspect the label to make sure it says “infused with white truffles.”  Don’t even think about labels that have “essence” or “aroma,” as their imposters made with 2,4-dithiapentane in some lab."

Tiger Woods faces psychological must-win with 54-hole lead at Bay Hill

This is a critical juncture for Tiger. I agree. He really needs to win this one . . .

Mark Cannizzaro: Tiger Woods faces psychological must-win with 54-hole lead at Bay Hill - NYPOST.com:

"The greatest closer on the planet this side of Mariano Rivera must close today, put his foot on the throat of Bay Hill’s 18 holes and the remaining contenders in the Arnold Palmer Invitational field and win.

In a year when blown 54-hole leads have trended toward an epidemic (Kyle Stanley at Torrey Pines, Spencer Levin in Phoenix, Charlie Wi at Pebble Beach and Bubba Watson at Doral), Woods today will try to close out his 49th victory in the 53 career events in which he’s entered the final round with the lead.

If he does, it will be Woods’ first PGA Tour victory since the BMW Championship in September 2009, which also happened to be the last time he carried the outright 54-hole lead into a Sunday and closed the deal."

Rick Smith on The Big Miss: Hank Haney violated player-coach confidentiality

It's good to see that some folks have some common sense and a moral compass . . .

Rick Smith on The Big Miss: Hank Haney violated player-coach confidentiality - ESPN:

"Rick Smith, a long-time swing instructor on the PGA Tour and former teacher to Phil Mickelson and other notable players, including Rocco Mediate and Lee Janzen, spoke out on Wednesday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational about Hank Haney's forthcoming book, "The Big Miss," about the teacher's six years as Tiger Woods' swing coach.

"I would rather be broke and not have a penny to my name before I violate the code of player-teacher confidentiality," Smith said. "In 27 years out here, I've never done that. I'm personally upset with Hank because he's broken and violated our code of ethics. If you have the opportunity and you're privileged to conversations, you will not and should not share anything from them with anyone. I don't care who it is.

"For all the guys who have committed their lives to teaching, this should be very upsetting and I know that I'm not the only one that feels this way. What Hank did is against the rules.""

Naples - the Birthplace of Pizza - Wine-Knows Travel

Sharing a snippet from my favorite travel maven. I learned a few things from this latest post, Naples - the Birthplace of Pizza:

Wine-Knows: Fine Wine & Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler:

"I am told by professionals that one of the secrets of a perfect pizza is the oven. Not only must it be wood-fired (which adds complex flavors), but a faultless pizza must also be cooked at temperatures as high as 700-800 degrees. At this heat pizzas only need to bake one minute. In Napoli, less is more with toppings. You’ll never see a combo. Simplicity reigns supreme and most shops feature only one or two toppings…usually as separate pizzas and not together. San Marzano tomatoes, discussed a few days ago, are the basis for the sauce, however, many pizzas do not have a sauce.

A jug of wine and thou…and a slice of pizza from Napoli."

Sad news.

Mike Weir’s Winning Wines - Business Review Canada:

"Did you know that Weir has a passion for wine? Not many people do, as his professional golfing career overshadows his business ventures in the media. Getting into the industry with his wife based on a passion for wine, Weir entered the wine industry with just five rows of vines in his front yard. Parallel to growth of the Niagara wine industry recognition, Weir’s interest in wine-making increased and he launched his first wines in April of 2005. Today, Mike Weir Winery is award winning and has become a successful venture for Weir, something he is proud of."

"Barrels imbue wine with much of the vanilla we taste. Their singed oak can offer up an echo of flowers in ancient forests, or deeper notes of caramel and butterscotch. Sometimes floating above the wine's fruit, sometimes wrapped around it, and sometimes welded awkwardly to a woody frame, vanilla's elemental allure is hard to ignore and easy to love. "

Tiger Woods putts way to within two shots of Abu Dhabi lead

It's fun seeing Tiger stay in contention.

Tiger Woods putts way to within two shots of Abu Dhabi lead - ESPN:
"I thought I played well today; I hit the ball just as well as I did yesterday and made a couple more putts today, which is nice," Woods said. "But the golf course is playing difficult. It's starting to speed up a little bit and the greens were quicker, drier, and it was tough."

McIlroy Outduels Woods and Shares Lead in Abu Dhabi

Tiger Woods, champion golfer, drives the ball ...
Image via Wikipedia
It's great to see Tiger in the mix!  Now he needs to get his putter going!

McIlroy Outduels Woods and Shares Lead in Abu Dhabi - NYTimes.com:
“It was a good ball-striking round,” Woods said. “I had a hard time reading the greens out there. The greens were pretty grainy, and I just had a hard time getting a feel for it. Toward the end I hit some pretty good putts, but over all I got fooled a lot on my reads.”

The Blind Leading the Blind - Wine-Knows: Fine Wine & Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler

I love the sage advice from the folks at Wine-Knows Travel.  Read and learn!

Wine-Knows: Fine Wine and Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler: The Blind Leading the Blind:
"Learning about wine should be fun and should not be intimidating. Whatever type of blind tasting you conduct, set it up so responses are confidential and that people feel safe and comfortable to learn. I like to always remind folks that “Whether you like a wine (or not), it’s the only time that you can be a 100% right!"

Wine-Knows: Bordeaux Garage Wines - Les Garagistes

Wine-Knows: Fine Wine and Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler:
"Thanks to Robert Parker, many of these garage wines have a cult-like following. In 1995 Parker rated some of the garagiste wines higher than Chateau Petrus… and the wine world has been topsy-turvy ever since. Some feel the garage wines are nothing but fruit bombs with high alcohol that are for collectors rather than wine drinkers. One writer described their popularity as “ The Emperor’s New Clothes” syndrome."

China brims with fake, high-end bottles of wine

China brims with fake, high-end bottles of wine:
"Seizing on exploding demand, China's ever-resourceful knock-off artists have uncorked a lucrative new business: phony high-end wines.

Bootleggers are dousing the market with fakes using tactics so bold they would make a sommelier blush, including refilling empty bottles from famous chateaus with inferior vintages."

Wine-Knows: Fine Wine and Gourmet Food Journeys for the Canelés - the Other Divine Treat from Bordeaux

Wine-Knows: Fine Wine and Gourmet Food Journeys for the Discerning Traveler: Canelés—the Other Divine Treat from Bordeaux:
"The fluted exterior of a canelé is a glossy, dark-brown-almost-black shell of crunchy, carmelized sugar. Inside these small delectables have a soft, custard-like interior of rum and vanilla. Only 2 inches tall, they can be consumed in a few bites."
