Jack Nicklaus is cultivating a 'Golden Bear' empire built on golf - Golf - SI.com

"The Nicklaus wines were born through sociable chitchat with Bill Terlato, who has a home at the Bear’s Club, the swank private enclave Nicklaus developed in Jupiter. (Michael Jordan built a cozy 37,000-square-foot cottage there.) “Jack likes to do business with friends,” says Terlato, CEO of his family wine company. “It creates a tremendous loyalty -- you want to do right by Jack. I’m concerned about his reputation as much as my own.”

The wines have sold around 10,000 cases annually since 2010, but Forbes pegs Nicklaus’s net worth at more than $250 million, and the wine deal is not going to change his life from a financial standpoint. So why do it? “Because it’s fun to walk into a restaurant and order your own wine!”
he says."

"It worked! I blanched them for five seconds, and that was enough. I was nervous about losing the vivid flavor that we love in pesto, and yes, a bit of that is sacrificed. That’s why I blanch the leaves for only five seconds. But my friends who tasted this week’s recipes had no doubt that they were eating pesto, and that it was delicious. I kept each batch in the refrigerator, without the garlic and cheese added, for at least a couple of days, and none of them faded. I’m thrilled with this development."

"Tiger Woods removed himself from consideration for the Ryder Cup team Wednesday evening with a clear message that he is not healthy enough to play.

One day after U.S. captain Tom Watson said he trusted Woods to give him the "straight skinny" on the condition of his back injury and his game, Woods said he called the 64-year-old captain to say he would not be available.

The decision spares Watson from having to leave Woods off the team, and it eliminates a distraction over the next three weeks before Watson announces his three captain's picks for the Sept. 26-28 matches against Europe at Gleneagles."

"“He was impressive out there,” Kuchar said. “I thought he was crazy to come back as early as he did [after surgery] but he said he thought it was the right thing to do, to test it and see how fit he is. He said he is recovering well, that after playing he gets up the next day and feels good.

“We had a little match going and on the last hole he duly stuffed one in there close from 160 yards to beat me. So that was a bit of a bummer but totally like the Tiger we’re used to seeing.”"

Tighter security ordered for some U.S.-bound flights - CNN.com

Read the full article: Tighter security ordered for some U.S.-bound flights - CNN.com:

""We will work to ensure these necessary steps pose as few disruptions to travelers as possible," Johnson said in a statement. "We are sharing recent and relevant information with our foreign allies and are consulting the aviation industry."

Specific steps or airports were not disclosed. A homeland security official said that TSA would work with airlines and security agencies overseas and that the changes will primarily focus on airports in Europe and the Middle East.

The effort does not involve changes to what travelers can take aboard flights. But passengers may see additional inspections of shoes and electronics, additional use of scanners designed to detect trace amounts of explosives, and another stage of screening at boarding gates, in some cases, the official said.

The measures do not involve U.S. domestic flights, and passengers could see changes as early as next week."

Consumer Alert For Wine Lovers | Ruth To The Rescue - ClickOnDetroit

Read the full article: Consumer Alert For Wine Lovers | Ruth To The Rescue - Home - ClickOnDetroit:

"Some wine lovers might want to rethink how they're opening their favorite bottle of red or white wine. A recall has been issued for a device called the Coravin 1000 Wine Access System. This opener works by using a hollow needle to penetrate the cork so it doesn't have to be removed from the bottle.

However, during pressurization the system can cause wine bottles to break.

Coravin has received 13 reports of bottles breaking, including one in which a bottle burst into four pieces and resulted in an injury involving two chipped teeth and a laceration that required stitches, four in which the bottles cracked and leaked, and eight in which bottles broke into two pieces."

"Saying he is pain-free and the risk for re-injury to his back that was operated on March 31 is minimal, Woods is anxious to tee it up with Jason Day and Jordan Spieth in Thursday's first round of the Quicken Loans National.

"Expectations don't change," Woods said when asked if he was here to win. "That's the ultimate goal. It's just that it's going to be a little bit harder this time. I just haven't had the amount of prep and reps that I would like, but I'm good enough to play, and I'm going to give it a go."

Why More Expensive Food just Tastes Better: Study - Science World Report

"Researchers at Cornell University discovered that people will pay more for their meals with the idea that the food will taste better than those at a cheaper price. In fact, the idea that people associate cost with quality can ultimately influence what we taste and how our senses are activated during a meal."

Summer travelers looking for bigger, longer vacations this year - CNBC

Summer travelers looking for bigger, longer vacations this year - CNBC:

"Travelers from the U.S. are looking to make more trips to Europe and Asia this summer, Gavin said. While the Asia trips (mainly Thailand, China, the Philippines and Taiwan) are likely due to a 4 percent price drop over last year, the European vacations appear to be catching up to pent-up demand left over from the recession, she said."

ESPN’s Masters ratings plummet without Tiger Woods | For The Win

ESPN’s Masters ratings plummet without Tiger Woods | For The Win:

"ESPN’s first-round telecast was down 800,000 viewers from last year to a record low of 2 million. That’s the lowest Thursday viewership in the seven years the network has been broadcasting the Masters.

How much of the drop is directly attributable to the lack of Tiger is anyone’s guess. Interestingly, he wasn’t featured in last year’s Thursday broadcast since he teed off early in the day. Could the idea of Tiger, or just his presence on any portion of the leaderboard, really be responsible for a 33% decrease in viewers?"

Lidia's Italy Blog » Blog Archive » Cooking 101: Smell the Herbs:

"Some herbs were better to cook while others were better added to the finished dish. Rosemary, bay leaves, thyme were mostly used for long cooking where their oils would be extracted slowly out of their leaves while sage, oregano, marjoram needed very little cooking time and basil, parsley and mint tossed raw, is enough to get their aroma."
